Code of Conduct
Wilmington Latin Dance
Owned and Operated by Summer McPherson
Creating a safe, inclusive, and joyful dance community.
Our Mission
At Wilmington Latin Dance, we believe Latin dance is a celebration - of life, culture, and connection. We’re here to create a space that’s fun, respectful, and inclusive, where dancers of all backgrounds, ages, and levels can come together to learn, grow, and enjoy the beauty of Latin Dance.
The Code of Conduct exists to help ensure everyone’s safety, comfort, and enjoyment at all of our events - classes, social, workshops, and beyond.
Who This Applies To
This Code of Conduct applies to everyone in our community - students, instructors, performers, DJ´s, volunteers, and guests - at any Wilmington Latin Dance event, whether online and in person. We welcome and respect all individuals, regardless of race, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, identity, or dance level.
Consent is Key
-
Always ask before you dance. A simple “Want to dance?” goes a long way.
-
No = No. No explanation is needed, and it’s okay to say no anytime - before or during a dance.
-
Check in during the dance. If you’re unsure whether a move or connection is comfortable, ask.
-
Consent can change. At any point. Let’s stay tuned in and respectful
What We Expect
We encourage everyone to approach a dance with joy, humility, and respect. You’re not just dancing - you’re creating a shared moment.
Please:
-
Respect your partner’s boundaries and body.
-
Practice good hygiene (fresh breath, clean clothes, you know the drill.)
-
Accept rejections gracefully.
-
Rotate partners with kindness and openness.
-
Be mindful of your space on the dance floor (aka don’t crash into people)
-
Lead or follow - your choice!
Roles aren’t assigned by gender. Feel free to dance any role you like, and respect others’ choices to do that.
What’s Not Okay
To keep our space safe, we do not tolerate:
-
Harassment, bullying, or discrimination of any kind
-
Inappropriate comments, jokes, or gestures
-
Body shaming or comments about someone’s appearance, size, or weight
-
Unwanted or aggressive physical contact
-
Disregarding for personal space or consent
-
Making others feel unwelcome, excluded, or unsafe

-

We’re committed to making our community safe and vibrant for everyone.
Accountability & Consequences
In any close-knit community, friendships, romantic relationships, and breakups may happen - and that’s normal. We encourage kindness, honesty, and clear communication in all relationships, both on and off the dance floor.
That said, we ask all community members to:
-
Refrain from bringing personal conflicts into the dance space // Leave personal conflicts or tension outside the dance space.
-
Treat former partner, friends, and fellow dancers with maturity and respect
-
Avoid behaviors that make others feel unwelcome, excluded, or unsafe
-
Understand that gossip, manipulation, or retaliation can harm the community dynamic
We’re not here to police personal relationships - but we will step in if someone’s behavior starts to make others feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
If you’re navigating a difficult situation and it’s affecting your experience at events, please reach out to Summer McPherson so we can help support a respectful environment for all.
